Mensajes de los organizadores de la huelga
Dear european colleagues,
We will ask italian citizens to boycott local telephone service (not only the net) to support our request of abolition of the timed urban tariff. In San Marino, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Thailand and a lot of other nations there is no timed urban tariff. In those countries people pay their local calls with the subscription to basic phone service and in some places with a very small flat fee for each call. They don't pay an additional flat subscription fee for unlimited local calls. Local calls are included in their basic subscription. Since in all Europe we already pay subscription to basic phone service the easiest solution is to abolish the timed urban tariff. If we do it we would have the same system of low, flat fees that caused Internet's success in USA and Canada.

This is the last call to ask other organisations to join this unique event. Who else wants to join? There are 11 days to the 31th! If you want to join the European phone/net boycott of the 31th of January 1999, or if you already decided to participate but are not on this list, please send me an email at info@abolizione.org so that we can tell it the media. It would be nice if those that can’t participate to the boycott put on their homepages something mentioning the European Boycott, in support of the organisations that do participate.

In Greece we had our first boycott on Jan 14th and our second is for 2 days, on 21st and 22nd(tomorrow). Our protest includes Greek users worldwide (100.000 users in Greece, 200.000 Greek users worldwide). We haven't form any organization yet. The whole thing started by me on Dec 25th. I'll try to translate as more as I can by tonight. Off course you can count the Greek Protesters for the European boycott on Jan 31st.

Greek Protesters for the European boycott

First phone/net boycot took place in Poland on 1st December 1998. Since 06.12.1998 every Sunday is a "Day without Internet". We've also undertaken many other actions. Our website adress is http://riva.koti.com.pl/~protest but that may change unexpectedly. We've had problems with serwer administrators in the past. We've been thrown out from several serwers. You can always reach us through http://besu.ch/protest. Right now we are trying to start some internauts organization ("Niedzielni" comes from Niedziela=Sunday- people called us Niedzielni because of our Sunday boycoting). There are some Internet organizations in Poland but they are not taking care of the normal, common Internauts. We are trying to form an organization which will fight for lower prices and Internauts rights. Unfortunatelly we there are many obstacles ahead of us, because in Poland there are only 1,2 mln Internauts while the whole coutry has about 40 mln citizens. It's very hard to convince people that Internet is an important thing. Today we have over 6000 people supporting us officialy and about 40000 people who take part in Sunday's boycoting.

O.K. Polish strikers are in. We've decided to join this action. Our protest on 31th January 1999 will be treated as a special one. We will tell our people that that Sunday will be the day of boycot all over Europe. We will also notify our media, politicians and Polish ISP. You can find our banners under: http://riva.koti.com.pl/~protest/banner.html. We are going to prepare a special page about this protest on our site. Besides that I've accelereted the matter of translating the main page of our site into English. Unfortunatelly I'm unable to translate the whole site. There are to many things changing on the subpages to keep them updated all the time.

I am Marc-Olivier, the webmaster of the French version of the Swiss boycott website. As you know, the Swiss will be striking on January 31st, too ! Our website was "born" three weeks ago, and it is already a success, at least in the French speaking part of Switzerland, where we are based and where all the newspapers reported about us ! 73% of 500 netsurfers voted for a strike and more than 2000 people (in two weeks) signed our petition. It is also very important that we strike on the same day as the French, because France has a great influence over the western part of Switzerland. It seems to me that the strike on January 31st will be more than just a rehearsal. I mean, we have 7 countries on strike (Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Poland and Switzerland). Have you ever seen something like that in Europe before ?? I think we should make a European strike at least every month and also find other means of action. That shouldn't be too difficult, since we now have this mailing-list...

Internet pour tous

Let's say it's a rehearsal for a european strike. But I do think it's much too short to set up a european movement. Someone told about a true european strike in spring. It's a good idea. We in France are striking on jan. 31th for internal reasons. We thank every european group for their support.
